THE ICAO ELP LANGUAGE EXAM
What is the ICAO ELP?
English Language Proficiency
While mechanical failures have become less and less prominent in aircraft accidents, ICAO has been paying an increasing attention to the human factors of aviation, such as communication.
Communication being one of the most important human elements has hence received a renewed attention and so a standardized examinations system, the so-called English Language Proficiency (ELP) has been created by the ICAO.
The main goal of ELP is to assess the level of your command of English Language in a standardized structure.
Why is it so important?
As language is the bedrock of communication, English Language Proficiency is a flight safety issue. From our side, the highest level of flight safety is guaranteed, have a look at our team!
ICAO ELP is therefore required to fulfil your duties as a Professional Pilot (Instrument Rating, Airline Transport Pilot License), but it is mandatory for Private Pilot License holders as well, if they want to fly abroad.
What should I know to get the ELP Certificate?
Aviation English and Radiotelephony
You must prove that you are able to understand basic radiotelephony and you must be in command of “plain” aviation-related English language.
The assessment focuses on the above-mentioned aspects rather than your knowledge of technical or operational aspects.
You will be evaluated on six so-called holistic descriptors:
Pronunciation, Vocabulary, Structure, Fluency, Comprehension and Interaction.
What are the types of certificates?
There are 6 levels.
You must achieve at least Level 4 to pass the exam.
between B1-B2 common EU frw.
4 years of validity
between B2-C1 common EU frw.
6 years of validity
close to C2 common EU frw.
valid for a lifetime
How does an ELP Exam look like?
The ELP Test is an oral examination
It must be emphasized that the ELP exam is an oral examination, i.e. there will be no writing, nor translation.
THE EXAM AT CTK HAS THE FOLLOWING STRUCTURE
This part is basically an aviation-related personal interview. The Interlocutor will ask basic career-related questions.
In this part of the assessment, your listening and comprehension skills are tested. You will hear 4 aviation-related audios including an ATIS report and an aviation-related story.
In the last phase, you are required to elaborate on a topic presented on an aviation-related photograph.
What do I need to take with me?
Have your ID/Passport, License (if applicable) on you.
How can I prepare?
Brush up your English knowledge by reviewing the necessary vocabulary, improve your grammar skills and last but not least learn and listen to radiotelephony transmissions!
How much does the exam cost?
The examination fee is 110 EUR for Central and Eastern European residents and Wizz Air Pilots. In other cases (including urgency) the examination fee is 180 EUR. If you are in doubt, do not hesitate to contact us!
